Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing is one of the most common and effective periodontal treatments available and is often the first treatment Dr. Jon Glenn recommends after you are diagnosed. This deep cleaning treatment is used to halt the spread of gum disease before it can become more severe, and it includes two main steps:

  • Scaling — In this step, plaque and tartar (dental calculus) are removed from the tooth surface.
  • Root Planing — In this step, the roots of the teeth are cleaned and smoothed to remove bacterial toxins.

The goal of scaling and root planing is to prevent the disease from progressing further. It is often combined with both non-surgical and surgical treatments, such as antibiotic therapy or pocket reduction surgery, to provide you with the best results.

Scaling and root planing can usually be completed comfortably without anesthetic. However, our dentist may offer local anesthetic or other comfort options to make sure you feel at ease while receiving your treatment. We may also recommend splitting your scaling and root planing procedure into several appointments, during which we will treat one section of the mouth at each visit to our office.

We invite you to call 949-644-0071 if you have any questions about scaling and root planing in Newport Beach, California, or to make an appointment with Dr. Glenn.
