Periodontics

Periodontal disease is an infection caused by harmful bacteria in the mouth. When these bacteria build up in the plaque on your teeth, they irritate and inflame the gum tissues, gradually progressing until the disease destroys your gums and supporting bone structure. Symptoms of periodontal disease include:

  • Red, swollen or tender gums
  • Bleeding while brushing, flossing or eating
  • Gum recession
  • Loose or separating teeth
  • Sores in the mouth
  • Pus between the gums and teeth
  • Persistent bad breath
  • Changes in your bite or in the fit of removable oral appliances

There are two main stages of gum disease — gingivitis and periodontitis. Gingivitis is the milder stage of the disease and can usually be controlled or even reversed with professional cleanings and improved at-home care when diagnosed early. Periodontitis is a more severe stage of this condition and requires more involved and frequent treatment to bring it under control
