Bone Grafting

Dr. Jon Glenn may recommend bone grafting if your jawbone is not thick or dense enough to support your teeth or dental implants. After you lose a tooth, your supporting jawbone begins to resorb, or deteriorate, at the site of the missing tooth. This causes the surrounding teeth to become unstable and eventually leads to further tooth loss. This deterioration may also be caused by periodontal disease. Bone grafting helps correct the resorption and ensure that your teeth have a stable foundation. This procedure is often needed before you can replace any missing teeth and fully restore your smile and oral function.

When you receive a bone graft, our dentist will transplant a piece of bone from another area of your jaw or body to your jawbone. The best results are achieved using your own bone tissue, but artificial bone material or bone fragments from a tissue bank may also be used if needed. After the procedure, your jawbone and the grafted bone tissue grow together to create a stronger and more stable foundation for your new dental implant.
